Sonlight K - Week 3 Day 3

Today was another great day. We still didn't get a chance to make a Thunder Cake (my friend brought me a delicious homemade almond cake for my birthday) so we will make that tomorrow or more likely on Sunday.

As far as what we did accomplish today...
We baked potatoes in the oven just as The Boxcar Children did in Chapter 10
The boys enjoyed piercing the potatoes
We ate a delicious lunch of baked potatoes with butter and salt (just like in the book) and we added chili and a LOT of sharp cheddar cheese (the boys favorite).
Delicious!
Munchkin completed Saxon Math 1 - Lesson 11

I asked him to complete just one line of 10s but, on his own accord, he decided to fill the entire page with his "best number 10s)
We also practiced first, second, and third using our kitchen chairs as a train
All About Reading - Lesson 30
He's still loving these stories too (my goal this weekend is to pick up some books he can read on his own from the library).
And finally, for Science, we built wind catchers...
The final product in action.
And finally, we have left Egypt and traveled to Greece for a one day visit. For dinner, my husband picked up Gyros for dinner and I'm happy to say the boys loved it.

I didn't take a picture but after dinner my husband shared some pictures with the boys of his trip to Greece. Wonderful Day!

Sonlight K - Week 3 Day 1

Today we read Chapter 9 of The Boxcar Children and in it the children ate cherry dumplings.  I debated about keeping true to the book but I just couldn't do it...so Ditto and I made Apple "Dumplings". Not quite but it is basically an apple cinnamon mixture fried inside of an eggroll wrapper and then rolled in cinnamon and sugar.
They were delicious!

After our treat we started Saxon Math 1 - Lesson 9
Very focused on the task at hand (putting his numbers cards in order - very easy work but it never hurts to do things you're already good at)
All on his own (and with much enjoyment), he decided to rearrange the numbers and form two digit numbers
Who knew a five year old could enjoy math so much
"Serious Munchkin" getting down to business on his After Lesson Worksheet
All About Reading - Lesson 28
He LOVED this story! He literally cracked up after every page.

After reading from our assigned reading about snowflakes in the Weather book, we made snowflakes using borax. It will be ready tomorrow morning (hopefully).

Then we read about "Electric Skies" in the Weather book and for a follow-up read Thunder Cake. Before reading, in an after to work on Munchkin's critical thinking and reading skills, I asked him to predict what he thought a thunder cake is...

After reading Thunder Cake and learning about some of the fears on the little girl, we discussed some of Munchkin's fears
We finally worked on our Egyptian collars (I intended to do this activity on Friday but we never got to it)
Ditto enjoying his Thunder Cake on his own
Using metal insets to make a template for a pyramid

So proud of his pyramid!
And lastly, for today's lesson in Language Lessons for Little Ones (Lesson 58), Munchkin was to tell me a story about something he liked to do under a tree.  Here it is:

Once upon a time I was playing in the mud by the tangerine tree. And I was playing with People. It was fun! Then I had to take a bath because it was my birthday.

Sonlight K - Week 2 Day 3

I woke up bright and early in order to have time to get dressed, have family scripture study time, read a chapter of The Boxcar Children, make our companion meal, and still get the boys to swim lessons by 8:30AM...believe it or not we were actually early to class.

breakfast made exactly as described in Chapter 6 of The Boxcar Children (eggs made with a little salt and milk - cooked in brown butter and brown bread with butter)

The boys LOVED this dish and devoured every bite of it (both also had seconds of bread)

On Monday I bought Munchkin a composition notebook at The Dollar Tree on Monday and last night I decided to pull out the Modge Podge and embellish it a little bit...
His reaction was better than I could have expected...he HUGGED it!

...and just stared at it asking when were we going to get to science for the day
He couldn't wait so he started by recording our science projects from last week on the first pages
We learned about clouds during science and then went outside to see what kind of clouds were in the sky...
Despite it being such a clear sky we were so thankful to find these clouds in the sky (I darkened the picture so they would show up better)
Munchkin came back inside and drew a picture of which type of clouds he thought they were (...stratus)
Afterward we read "Cloudette" (great book by the way) and then we made clouds in a jar.  This was such a fun activity...the boys spent an hour working with them.

Ditto checking out his "rain"

Sonlight Science Activity Pages
Language Lessons for Little Ones - Lesson 55 through 56
Saxon Math 1 - Lesson 7 (Making a graph of cars, trucks, and bikes)
All About Reading Lesson 26 (gameboard where we worked on double letter endings, i.e. glass, still, etc.)

For our study of Egypt today, we wrote secret messages to each other using hieroglyphics (Munchkin's note said, "I love you")...so sweet!
