Sonlight K - Week 5 Day 4

One of Munchkin's favorite part of our schooling is traveling the world learning about other cultures.  This week we have been learning about the Vikings and each day, as soon as we start school, he dresses up in his homemade Viking costume...
...and listens attentively as we read about the clothes the Vikings wore, the food they ate, their homes, and finally, today, their ships. He loves it! And today and yesterday, Ditto even sat in on our lessons to read about what the Vikings ate and their ships.

To celebrate our week of learning about the Vikings, after I put Ditto down for his nap, Munchkin watched Lyle, the Kindly Viking. Then, while I was eating lunch, he came to me all on his own and asked if I would show him what Viking letters looked like.  I found this image and he wrote and drew this picture...
It has been a fun Viking week!

For our language lesson today (Lesson 73), I read Munchkin The Snow Man by Mildred Plew Meigs and then asked him to retell it to me.

He had such a tough time with this.  He kept asking me if he could just read it because he couldn't remember anything about it.  I told him we would just take a little break and try again later today or tomorrow.  (We'll see what I can come up with to help him understand how to do this better.)

In math today, Munchkin was introduced to fractions...
half
put together is a whole
taken apart is half
and then we enjoyed a delicious snack and...
...saved the seeds for a future math lesson
Number writing practice (we each circle our favorite and discuss why they are our favorites - we both liked all  number 16s)

this week we are asking ourselves, "Do all apples have the same amount of seeds? Does each half of an apple always have the same amount of seeds?" Throughout the coming days, we will be eating 9 more apples, recording the seed information, and then graphing our findings to answer our questions
In All About Reading, we worked on the "nk" blend.
And we finished our day with a little math review...
Short bead stair memorization work
And finally, Munchkin worked with some Montessori materials...teens board. This is very easy work for him but I just wanted to make sure I didn't make any assumptions as far as his understanding of numbers.

Meanwhile, Ditto did not take a nap today so he joined us for some of our school time today. He kept very focused and busy by working on these Halloween/Fall pattern cards and manipulatives.  I am just working on matching with his right now and later will begin to work on continuing the pattern.
Another great day!

My hubby and I are heading to Chicago tomorrow (our first couples trip since before Munchkin was born...that's 5 years) and we don't get back till Tuesday so we won't have any school posts for a few days.

Sonlight K - Week 5 Day 1

As requested by Munchkin, we began our day with History.  Today he received an introduction to the Vikings. After our reading he came up with a Viking costume...

We worked on math, reading, and developmental workbook.  That was about it for today because I wanted to focus on Ditto's school...so we spent the rest of the day doing some Mother Goose Curriculum...

Sonlight K - Week 4 Day 4

We didn’t get much (more like any) school in yesterday. It was an extremely busy day with errands and more. So, on to Thursday.
Here are just a few of the things we were able to accomplish today…
We worked on Saxon Math 1 Lesson 14. Munchkin practiced writing his best 13s, making shapes on our Geoboards and acting out stories to practice addition and subtraction. Then he completed his worksheet (pictured above).
He completed a page in his Developmental Workbook. {That’s a Jolly Rancher candy in his cheek. Some days, very rarely, he gets a special treat for working so hard at school.}
For Language, Munchkin completed Lesson 68. He learned a new song. He asked me to sing it quite a few times throughout the day and occasionally would join in.
And for Reading, Munchkin worked on All About Reading Lesson 33 – “ck” endings.
He understood and picked up on this concept very easily.
And then we played this game (matching big ducks to little ducks based on rhyming words printed on the back). He enjoyed this game.
We also continued reading The Dolphin Adventure and our Mother Goose Nursery Rhymes. Ditto thoroughly enjoys joining us for these two reads…

Sonlight K - Week 4 Day 2

To begin today, we started with math because we didn't get to it yesterday.  So, this week we will do math Tuesday through Friday (instead of our usual Monday through Thursday).  We started with Lesson #13 - Munchkin had to find things in the room that had a triangular shape...it was hard work but he found...
...sharks teeth on Ditto's nesting boxes
...the shark's dorsal fin
...our tangrams
We then moved on to a shape sorting exercise (the triangles - three sides and angles, from the non-triangles)

I then drew these two circles on our white board and wrote specific numbers in each and asked him to figure out what attribute I used to sort the numbers. He figured out very quickly (numbers with curves on the left and numbers without curves on the right).
He then completed the After Lesson Worksheet (#13A)
Because I wasn't as prepared as I should have been (I lead Ditto's Joy School at my house this morning), for reading I just asked Munchkin to pick his favorite story from our reading book and re-read it today. (I'm prepping for tomorrow right now so that doesn't happen again.)
He worked on his page in his Sonlight Developmental Workbook from Pre-K.
He enjoyed doing this art study from his Language Lessons for Little ones - Lesson #66 and #67
And finally we got through a few of our Five in a Row activities for Storm in the Night
Social Studies: Relationships
Munchkin's answers to a couple of questions in the FIAR manual:
(How did Grandfather show love to Thomas?) Keeps telling him stories.
(Is there someone you like to share stories with and spend time with?) You (meaning me - I promis this was completely unprompted)

Social Studies: Emotions {Fear}
(...ask him if there is something that bothers him.) I'm afraid of stegosaurus spikes even though I know all dinosaurs are dead.

Really great day! And I am surprised and thankful that we got through as much as we did considering
the morning was filled with Ditto's school.

Sonlight K - Week 3 Day 3

Today was another great day. We still didn't get a chance to make a Thunder Cake (my friend brought me a delicious homemade almond cake for my birthday) so we will make that tomorrow or more likely on Sunday.

As far as what we did accomplish today...
We baked potatoes in the oven just as The Boxcar Children did in Chapter 10
The boys enjoyed piercing the potatoes
We ate a delicious lunch of baked potatoes with butter and salt (just like in the book) and we added chili and a LOT of sharp cheddar cheese (the boys favorite).
Delicious!
Munchkin completed Saxon Math 1 - Lesson 11

I asked him to complete just one line of 10s but, on his own accord, he decided to fill the entire page with his "best number 10s)
We also practiced first, second, and third using our kitchen chairs as a train
All About Reading - Lesson 30
He's still loving these stories too (my goal this weekend is to pick up some books he can read on his own from the library).
And finally, for Science, we built wind catchers...
The final product in action.
And finally, we have left Egypt and traveled to Greece for a one day visit. For dinner, my husband picked up Gyros for dinner and I'm happy to say the boys loved it.

I didn't take a picture but after dinner my husband shared some pictures with the boys of his trip to Greece. Wonderful Day!

Sonlight K - Week 3 Day 2

For most of our school today, we had my sister joining us (she took us out to lunch for my birthday - the big 30 today).  I must say, it was actually really nice having her join us!

Among other things...

Munchkin showed off his reading skills for Auntie by finishing his All About Reading Lesson 28
He completed his Lesson 10 written and oral assessment in Saxon Math 1 (FYI: He received a perfect score!)
We finally completed his Egyptian collar (I had planned for this to be done last Friday - but it was worth the wait). Here he is showing off his collar and shooting an imaginary bow and arrow. By the way, he spent the rest of the day pretending to be an Egyptian and playing "Egyptian games" with Ditto (always a willing participant in his brother's creations).
For Science, we learned about wind and to demonstrate wind and the varying degrees (we had discussed how wind is measured on a scale of 1 to 12 - 12 being a hurricane), we tied streamers to our box fan. (By the smile on her face, Auntie was enjoying this activity, too.)
He liked this so much he did it for about 15 minutes...

He changed the speed of the fan and we observed the difference in way the streamers blew and tried to guess where the speed of the wind would measure on the wind scale.
Our other science topic for the day was "terrible twisters" so we made a tornado in a jar for our activity. Here Munchkin is shaking it up...

I love this boy!
We added food coloring and even though it made it a little harder to see, Munchkin was happy!
